SCSCB Conference

Here are a pair of gray kingbirds. They are a common bird on St. Martin, but this photo was taken in Grenada, where I spent the last week attending the meeting of the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds. It was an amazing meeting, with over 160 attendees from 35 different countries throughout the Caribbean and beyond. There is a huge variety of scientific, conservation and outreach work being done for Caribbean birds and I learned a tremendous amount at the conference. If you are interested in this, I highly recommend following the society on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CaribbeanBirdsSCSCB

One of the initiatives that I find particularly exciting is the Caribbean Birding Trail, which will eventually comprise many birding sites throughout the Caribbean, and use birds as a focal point to generate interest in natural and cultural heritage, as well as generate sustainable tourism revenues that primarily go to local businesses and stay on the island rather than being sucked away by multinational corporations. I look forward to helping develop sites on St. Martin for this project. You can follow it at: https://www.facebook.com/caribbeanbirdingtrail

The bird viewing hut at Little Bay Pond is actually featured as one of the sites already, but much work remains to be done to promote it so that tourists and residents are aware of it and use it: http://www.caribbeanbirdingtrail.org/?page_id=608
