Shorebirds Everywhere: Philipsburg Drainage Canal

Shorebirds are starting to show up everywhere on St. Martin as they arrive for the winter and stop by during their migration. I snapped a few photos when I was crossing the drainage canal in Philipsburg after a meeting yesterday. I think we have the solitary sandpiper, killdeer, semipalmated sandpiper and pectoral sandpiper, but some of the sandpipers look alike, so if any real bird experts want to weigh in on the identifications, please do!

Also, cups. Part of me hates to show this aspect of the island, but it’s an issue that we all need to work on. Litter is bad for the environment, depressing when you live here, an eyesore for the tourists and, most of all, it has ruined many otherwise wonderful wildlife photos for me. It will take a lot of work to really change this, but we can all start by taking personal responsibility for our trash.
