Just Like the White-winged Dove

I’ve had a few people ask me about the White-winged Dove, because it is a relatively recent arrival to the island. It is native to the Caribbean, but has been expanding its range into the Lesser Antilles. At first glance, it looks a lot like our native Zenaida Dove (known locally as the Mountain Dove, and if you know other names for it, please share in the comments).

The White-winged Dove has a prominent white band on its wings, which is at the edge of the wing when folded, and in the middle of the wing in flight. It also has a red eye, surrounded by a patch of blue skin. (The Zenaida Dove has a black eye with no bare skin around it.)

According to Stevie Nicks, the White-winged Dove sings a song that sounds like it’s singin’ “Hoo, baby, hoo, baby, hoo!” On St. Martin, the call is similar but does not include the “baby” part.

A big thank you to our recent supporters: Neile King, Larry Freemantle, Meredith Mayo Arsenio and Jadira Veen. You can support the project on Kickstarter, and in addition to being thanked in the book, there are a bunch of great rewards for our project backers.
