Nature Walk and Critter Photo Shoot

Today at the Sister Marie Laurence School we tried something new. We went on a short hike near Belvedere and collected a few insects and spiders along the way. After the walk, I set up a mini photo studio in the classroom to take macro (very close-up) photos of the animals we found.

I think it went really well and we learned quite a few things. We started searching on different plants because different insects prefer different kinds of plants and we kept a special eye out for plants with leaves that had been partially eaten. By looking closely, we found a wide variety of species in just a small area, a technique that could work anywhere that has at least a little vegetation. I think seeing and learning about the process of photographing the animals was interesting to see as well.

Here are some students taking turns looking through the camera at a caterpillar, and I’ll post some of the results of our photo shoot shortly.
