CORRECTION: This Is Not a Crab.

Since the publication of the 2nd edition of the book, and particularly during the French-translation process a few errors have been found. So far, they are mostly small typos and such, but Amandine found a big one. Actually, comically huge, as it places about 10,000 species in the wrong taxon.

In the millipedes section, it says that millipedes make up the order Decapoda, when in fact they are the class Diplopoda. Decapoda means ten-footed and includes crustaceans like crabs and shrimp. Diplopoda means double-footed, because each millipede body segment is actually two fused segments, so each segment has two pairs of legs.

Apologies for any confusion, although luckily this mistake is so huge that it is pretty obviously wrong. The technical term for this type of mistake is “brain fart.” The online edition has been updated and the correction will also be listed in the upcoming summer 2013 supplement to the guide.

Also, to further clarify: although many decapods are delicious, do not eat millipedes. Some millipedes emit toxic liquids or gases as a defense mechanism and they will probably ruin your paella.
