Little Woodslave

I’ve been drafting some updated slideshow presentations on a variety of St. Martin wildlife topics. It’s fun because there are so many ways to look at wildlife on St. Martin. The Lesser Antilles are like a series of little experiments showing how animals adapt to slightly different conditions and different mixes of native and introduced species. I’ve added a page to our web site about the education project, including summaries of a few of the talks: http://www.sxmwildlife.com/education/

This little guy is a dwarf gecko that is found only on the islands of the Anguilla Bank (Anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barts and many of the smaller islets). It has only been considered a distinct species for about ten years, and there are many very similar species on other islands. Over time it has adapted to the available habitat and competitive environment here, while it’s closest relatives have done the same on other islands, diverging from a common ancestor.
